Annual Billing Mechanics for Pro

How annual billing works

  • Billed $100 immediately for the full 12 months
  • Access is granted immediately upon payment
  • Renewal is automatic at the 12-month mark unless cancelled
  • To switch: Settings > Billing and plans > GitHub Copilot > Change plan
  • Switching from monthly: takes effect at next billing date

Cancellation and refunds

  • Cancelling annual: access continues to end of 12-month period
  • No partial refund for unused months on annual plan
  • Billing errors: contact GitHub Support for case-by-case review
  • Annual break-even: 10 months of use (vs monthly cost)
  • Downgrade to Free is always available, not a full cancel

When Annual Billing Makes Sense

Choose annual billing if...

  • You are committed to Copilot for the next year
  • You are a solo developer who will stay on Pro
  • You want the lowest per-month cost possible
  • You do not expect to upgrade to Pro+ soon
  • You code regularly (not just occasionally)

Stay on monthly billing if...

  • You are still evaluating whether Pro is worth it
  • You might upgrade to Pro+ in the next 6 months
  • You are moving to a team plan (Business) soon
  • You want flexibility to cancel or change plans
  • You hit the 300 PRU limit and are considering Pro+

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does GitHub Copilot cost per year?
GitHub Copilot Pro costs $100/year on annual billing, or $120/year on monthly billing ($10 x 12 months). Annual billing saves $20 per year, equivalent to getting 2 months free. Pro+ is monthly only at $39/month. Business and Enterprise do not offer annual billing options.
Which Copilot plans offer annual billing?
Only the Pro plan ($10/month) offers annual billing at $100/year. Pro+ ($39/month), Business ($19/seat/month), and Enterprise ($39/seat/month) are monthly only. For team plans, GitHub's enterprise licensing agreements may include custom pricing for 100+ seats - contact GitHub sales.
What happens if I cancel my annual Copilot subscription?
If you cancel an annual Pro subscription, access continues until the end of the annual billing period. There is no partial refund for unused months. If billing was in error, contact GitHub Support. Monthly plans can be cancelled at any time and access ends at the current billing period.
Can I switch from monthly to annual Copilot billing?
Yes. Go to GitHub Settings > Billing and plans > GitHub Copilot > Change plan. When you switch to annual, you are charged $100 immediately for the full year. The switch takes effect at your next billing date if you switch mid-cycle.
