  3. 3In the left sidebar: Billing and plans

What Happens After Cancellation

Monthly billing

Access continues until the end of the current monthly billing period. Example: if you cancel on the 10th and your billing date is the 1st, access continues for ~20 more days.

Annual billing (Pro)

Access continues until the end of the 12-month annual period. No partial refund for remaining months. You paid for the year - use it until it ends.

Business/Enterprise

Seats remain active until the current monthly billing period ends. All developers in the org lose Copilot access at the same time.

Consider downgrading instead of cancelling

If you want to reduce cost without losing all functionality, downgrade to the Free tier. Free gives you 2,000 code completions and 50 premium requests per month. Basic completions are genuinely useful even if you cannot use Chat or agent mode frequently. You can upgrade again at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cancel GitHub Copilot?
For individual plans: GitHub.com > Profile icon > Settings > Billing and plans > GitHub Copilot > Edit/Manage > Cancel plan > Confirm. Access continues until the end of your current billing period (monthly or annual). For Business/Enterprise: the org admin must cancel via Organisation Settings > Billing > GitHub Copilot.
Will I get a refund if I cancel GitHub Copilot?
No. GitHub does not offer partial refunds for unused days on monthly billing. For annual Pro subscriptions, access continues until the 12-month period ends - no refund is issued for remaining months. If you believe billing was in error, contact GitHub Support to review on a case-by-case basis.
What happens to my data if I cancel GitHub Copilot?
Code suggestions stop immediately after your billing period ends. Your chat history in Copilot Chat is retained in the GitHub UI. Your repository code and GitHub account are completely unaffected by Copilot cancellation. If you resubscribe, your previous chat history is still accessible.
Can I pause GitHub Copilot instead of cancelling?
There is no pause feature. Your options are to continue paying, cancel (access ends at billing period), or downgrade to the Free tier. Downgrading to Free preserves unlimited code completions but limits you to 50 premium requests per month. This is often better than full cancellation if you still want basic completions.
